Black and White Wednesday: "Taxing" by Gumen and Gamble

Remember the TV show Taxi, Groove-ophiles? Great show, funny and charming, with a stellar cast of folk; many of whom would become household names (Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Andy Kaufman, to name some of the biggest). When Crazy Magazine #57 came out in October 1979, the show was just barely into its second season, but it was already popular enough for comicbook skewering! Here's Murad Gumen and Kent Gamble's take on the show, but it's really their parody that lives up to the name..."Taxing!"

  1. LOVE that show, also used to love Crazy and Cracked. was never a Mad fan. Those magazines were so expensive to a 9 year old so I had to consider carefully wether to buy one or get 3 or 4 comics instead.

  2. I was always the oddball that preferred Cracked and Crazy to Mad. Yeah, not a lot of friends lol

  3. Looks to me like Gamble either was a student of or asked to swipe Mort Drucker, since the head shots on page 1 look like what Drucker would've done over at Mad.

    1. You got that right! Everyone wanted to draw like Drucker in the '60's & '70's.

    2. Crazy started out as unique among humor mags when first launched but quickly became another Mad knockoff after Marv Wolfman was no longer at the helm.

  4. Walter Brogan was another Drucker clone of this era, they just could not hold a candle to Mort's talent. There were lots of things I enjoyed about Crazy, but the TV and movie parodies ( unless they were by regular Marvel artists ) were not on that list.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
